Eliza Reid

Eliza Reid is a writer, editor, and cofounder of the annual Iceland Writers Retreat. Reid grew up near Ottawa, Canada and moved to Iceland in 2003. Her husband Guðni Th. Jóhannesson was elected President of Iceland in 2016. In her capacity as first lady, she has been active in promoting gender equality, entrepreneurship and innovation, tourism and sustainability, and the country’s writers and rich literary heritage. Her first book, Secrets of the Sprakkar: Iceland’s Extraordinary Women and How They Are Changing the World, was an instant bestseller in Iceland and Canada and was recommended by Hillary Rodham Clinton, Margaret Atwood and many others. Reid's first novel, the mystery Death of a Diplomat, will be published in early 2025 by Sphere Books (UK), Sourcebooks (US) and Simon & Schuster Canada.

Reid was previously editor for Icelandair’s in-flight magazine, a staff writer at Iceland Review and has been published in the New York Times, The Globe and Mail, Monocle and others.

As first lady, Reid is patron of several organizations in Iceland including the Alzheimer’s Society, the Iceland Symphony Youth Orchestra, the Icelandic Culinary Team, Pieta House and the United Nations Association of Iceland. Reid has four children and a stepdaughter.
