Rafia Ghubash

Dr Rafia Ghobash is the first Emirati psychiatrist and the first to obtain the degree of Professor in Psychiatry. She was the first woman to serve as president of a regional university, as President of the Arabian Gulf University in Bahrain for eight consecutive years. She was previously the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the United Arab Emirates University. She received her PhD in psychiatry from the University of London in 1992, as well as the British Diploma in Psychiatry and Neurology and the Arab Board Diploma. She obtained her Bachelor's degree in medicine and surgery from the Kasr Al-Aini Faculty of Medicine.


Dr Ghobash represents one of the Arab women leaders who was able to achieve high-level achievements in record time, culminating in the most important societal cultural achievement, when she established the first women's museum in the Arab world in Dubai in 2012. Recently, she opened a second museum, The Emirati Art Museum, in her mother's house built in 1969.


She has had an active social and cultural presence. Her research has focused on the epidemiology of mental illness, particularly women's mental health in the UAE. She has published over 50 research studies in many prominent international scientific journals including; Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology, Psychological Medicine, Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica, European Psychiatry and The International Journal of Social Psychiatry and Psychological Reports.
