Sue Wickison
Sue Wickison, BA Hons in Scientific Illustration, is an internationally acclaimed botanical illustrator with a distinguished career spanning decades. She spent nine years as an illustrator at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, London, contributing to numerous publications, and was awarded a Winston Churchill Fellowship to collect orchids in the Solomon Islands. In recognition of her contributions to orchid research and illustration, the orchid Coelogyne susanae was named in her honor.
Over eight years, Sue conducted research and travel on the Plants of the Quran, culminating in a five-month solo exhibition at Kew and the launch of her book Plants of the Quran: History and Culture. Her work has been recognized with the 2023 Jill Smythies Award from the Linnean Society of London for excellence in botanical illustration and, in 2025, she was awarded the Associate of Honour from the New Zealand Royal Horticultural Society, the highest accolade for services to horticulture in New Zealand. Sue’s work features in collections worldwide. Sue’s work features in collections worldwide and she is honoured to announce that her body of work consisting of 30 very large watercolour paintings created for the Plants of the Quran exhibition and book has been acquired by the Islamic Art Museum Malysia. She is proud that they are the new guardians of the work and copyright for the future
