Tarek El-Ariss
Tarek El-Ariss is an author, scholar, and the James Wright Professor, and Chair of Middle Eastern Studies at Dartmouth College.
Born and raised in Beirut during the Civil War, he trained in philosophy and comparative literature, and his work explores displacement, war, and desire.
He is the author of Trials of Arab Modernity, and Leaks, Hacks, and Scandals, and editor of The Arab Renaissance: A Bilingual Anthology of the Nahda. In 2021, he received a Guggenheim Fellowship for his memoir, Water on Fire.
His work has been featured in The New York Times, the Times Literary Supplement, and World Literature Today.
