Toyin Akanni

Toyin Akanni is a British-Nigerian author, environmentalist, educator and speaker. Her love for storytelling was ignited by the riveting folklore tales told by her grandmother. She holds a Master’s degree in environmental science and a creative writing diploma from the University of Cambridge. She is a founding member of the Ras Al Khaimah Creative Writers' group.

Her picture book series Barki the Brave and Barki and the Forest Fire promotes animal consideration, highlights deforestation and offers an engaging way to teach children and families about environmental concerns. The Barki series speaks straight to Akanni’s belief that storytelling is the most powerful way to communicate ideas and explain complicated concepts. This is especially demonstrated in her work as an educator and speaker. She also advocates for girls' education and for campaigns that promote mitigating anthropogenic activities affecting the Earth.

Akanni currently resides in the UAE with her husband and three children. When she isn't in the classroom, she enjoys sharing the diverse shades of her culture through her writing and dancing awkwardly to Afrobeats.
